Community Garden

Welcome to our Wellholme Park Community Garden project.

Our aims and outline plans are shown below.  Thank you for taking the time to read these.  We welcome input from any interested party, to help us to develop and deliver the Community Garden.  Please use the attached form to express your interest and to let us know your views.

Purpose

The cost of living is constantly in the news. It is regularly reported that food costs are high, particularly fresh foods. It is difficult for people to grow their own food in Brighouse, as there is a shortage of allotments.  Therefore, the Friends of Wellholme Park propose to convert a redundant bowling green into a growing area. In addition to lowering food costs this will support the community by improving the wellbeing of those involved.

Environment

A key aim of our plans, is to encourage the community to use and understand and protect the natural world that is Wellholme Park. The use of chemicals in these gardens seems counter to that aim. Therefore, chemicals will not be allowed.

Pest control can be achieved by encouraging natural predators. Therefore, beds will be created to encourage bees and other insects.  A Bug hotel will be built.  Areas for Hedgehog nesting will be created.

A communal compost bin will be provided.

Peat and peat based products will not be allowed.

Litter bins will not be provided. Members will be expected to take litter home.

Structure

  • The bowling green is surrounded by a path and grass borders. These will be retained.
  • The area, has a hut, which  will be used as a shelter.
  • A paved path leads from an entrance gate, to the edge of the green. A ramp which is suitable for wheelchair access, will be installed here.
  • Raised beds will be provided
  • Plots will be separated by one metre wide paths.  A two metre wide path will lead from the ramp, into the growing area. One and a half metre wide paths will surround each Raised Bed.
  • Ground level beds will allow the growth of bulk crops.
  • A container to be used for materials storage
  • Water Storage
